The Community Service Program (KKN) in Nusukan Sub District, Surakarta City, is a form of community service carried out by students from Diponegoro University. This activity aims to develop local potential and improve the quality of education in the community. One of the problems identified during the survey was the lack of interest in reading among children, as indicated by their low enthusiasm for books and literacy activities.

The Nusukan government has made efforts to provide opportunities for children to read by establishing a library with a wide range of interesting and complete books. However, the children are more interested in playing with gadgets. Therefore, the UNDIP KKN team is working to increase children’s literacy interest in Nusukan through a work program titled “Si GemCa: Edukasi Gemar Membaca”

On Friday, July 26, 2024, the UNDIP KKN team in Nusukan carried out their work program in several sessions. The first session focused on the importance of reading, followed by reading practice with “Bilingual Storybook Reading (English-Indonesian).” The bilingual reading aimed to enhance the children’s English knowledge in a fun way.

In this activity, a student from English Literature Diponegoro University printed a children’s storybook titled “The Mouse and the Lion,” translated it into English by themselves, and designed it as attractively as possible. This was done so that children would feel entertained by the visuals and find the text easy to read. The book was then distributed to the children who attend the event, and the English Literature student began reading it in both Indonesian and English to the children.

After the storybook reading, the children were asked to summarize the story that they had read, followed by identifying new English vocabulary. During the event, the children showed interest by actively participating, flipping through the book to read and view the visualizations of the story, writing their names in the book, and not leaving their books in the event hall.

Through this work program, the UNDIP KKN team in Nusukan sub district hopes to contribute to increasing children’s literacy interest, so they will be more often in visiting the library to read other interesting stories and fables.
