In a remarkable leap forward for linguistic education, the Faculty of Humanities at Diponegoro University proudly inaugurated its first-ever Summer Course in Corpus Linguistics. This five-day virtual program witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 50 countries, underscoring the global allure and significance of this specialized linguistic discipline. With a diverse array of cultures and perspectives converging online, this initiative has set a new benchmark in promoting international cooperation in the field of language and cultural studies.

The inaugural Summer Course in Corpus Linguistics attracted a diverse range of participants from around the world, including nations such as China, Canada, Poland, the Philippines, Pakistan, Egypt, the United States, and many more. This impressive international representation showcased the worldwide interest in this unique educational offering.

The course, which took place from July 10 to July 14, 2023, featured a well-structured program, with each day dedicated to in-depth exploration of various aspects of corpus linguistics.

  • July 10 – The program commenced with opening remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Diponegoro University, setting the stage for a week of enlightening sessions. Dr. Prihantoro, a notable scholar from Diponegoro University, introduced the course structure, providing participants with an overview of what to expect. Additionally, Dr. Robbie Love from Aston University, UK, conducted a session on “Introduction to Corpus Linguistics and Corpus Query Systems,” laying the foundation for the course.
  • July 11 – Dr. Andressa Gomide, representing the Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal, led a session on “Introduction to Corpus Query Techniques,” delving deeper into the practical aspects of corpus linguistics.
  • July 12 – Dr. Peter Crosthwaite, an expert from the University of Queensland, Australia, guided participants through “Introduction to Concordances and Frequency Lists,” offering valuable insights into this essential area of study.
  • July 13 – Dr. Karlina Denistia, hailing from UNS, Indonesia, enlightened the participants on “Introduction to Collocation,” providing a critical perspective on language analysis.
  • July 14 – The course concluded with an illuminating session by Dr. Raffaela Bottini of Lancaster University, UK, focusing on “Lexical Complexity in Corpus Research,” further enriching the participants’ knowledge.
